Description

Captain Blake Banks was a lifelong commercial fisherman who lived and fished out of Cortez, Florida. His collection includes log books in which he wrote about the weather the water, and daily activities at sea, photographs of his crew and his catches, as well as a large number of marine specimens including shells, corals, and sponges. The collection was donated to the Florida Maritime Museum by Blake's wife, Betty.

Sea Plume (Antillogorgia spp.) with brittle star
Gray to white branch coral. Central stem has smaller beaded branches extending from it. 5-legged organism with very long legs entwined around the coral.

Diffuse Ivory Bush Coral (Oculina diffusa)
Pale tan branching coral attached to spiny oyster shell. Exterior of shells covered with barnacles, coral.

Branching Fire Coral (Millepora alcicornis)
White coral. Solid triangular mass with some short, rounded branches protruding from the front. Many branches extending from the top, kind of melded together.

Lettuce Coral (Agaricia agaricites)
Flat(ish) coral. White at center, turning to gray at the edges. Some spots of purple. Surface ridged.

Knobby Sea Rod (Eunicea spp.)
Fan coral with gray/tan branches attached to edge of spiny oyster shell (spine side down).
