Radio Direction Finders (RDF)

Radio direction finders (RDF) detect radio signals from broadcast stations on shore and measure the direction of the station based on the strength of the signal. Broadcasting stations use non-directional beacons (meaning the signals are broadcast in all directions) with station identification information included in their transmissions. With this information, a sailor can use multiple signals to triangulate his ship’s position.
